The Chinese Cultural Centre initiated the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Harvest Moon Festival in 1994 in Metropolitan Toronto. In keeping with its traditional themes of family reunion and games and treats for the young, a series of children’s competitions in painting, essay writing, and karaoke was started.
Karaoke, which originated in Japan, is very popular in Asia, and is a relaxing form of recreation which Torontonians have picked up. The Children’s Karaoke Contest is unique in Toronto (many adult karaoke contests have proliferated) and encourages the young to pick up songs very easily. The contest is divided into 2 sections: junior 4 to 10 years old; senior 11 to 18 years old. The 1994 Junior Champion was 5 year-old Richie Vuong, a most delightful singer with the greatest presence! The Senior Champion was William Shek who was definitely the most polished singer. The 1995 Junior Champion was 9 year-old Charles Mok and the senior champion was 15 year-old Sally Kwan, two very accomplished singers.
In 1996, the Children’s Karaoke Contest, the only one for children
in Toronto, will take place on September 22nd (Sunday) 1996, at the Oriole Community Centre, 2975 Don Mills
Road West (Sheppard Aveune East and Don Mills Road), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The winners will be asked to perform in the Mid-Autumn Harvest Moon Banquet on September 27th (Friday) at
the China Town International Restaurant, 421 Dundas Street West., 3rd Floor, at 7 p.m..
