Inspired by the ancient Chinese poem Nine Songs by Qu Yuang, the highly acclaimed Cloud Gate Dance Theatre transforms the ancient epic into a captivating dance-opera that deals with the frustrations of modern life, yet at the same time offers a universal message of renewal and hope. Choreographed to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Nine Songs is a lavish and visual full-length dance-opera that takes the modern dance world by storm.
The Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto is very honoured to co-present with the Hummingbird Centre the Canadian debut of Nine Songs on November 26 and 27 in celebration of Canada's Year of Asia Pacific.
Founded by artistic director and choreographer Mr Lin Hwai-min (ªLÃh¥Á), the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre is the premier contemporary dance theatre in Southeast Asia and one of the principal companies that specialise in the genre throughout the world. Its innovative, avant garde interpretation of ancient myths and texts has won both praise and admiration, and the company has toured many parts of the world. Its New York debut took place many years ago and they also perform frequently in European cities.
