An Expression of Love in giving back to our Community

The Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, in association with the Mon Sheong Foundation, will host a charity performance in celebration of the Chinese New Year in 2008. Titled "Rolex presents: A Chinese New Year Celebration with Chan Hon Goh, Prima Ballerina of the National Ballet of Canada and Friends", this premier presentation will be held at the P.C. Ho Theatre of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Toronto on Saturday, January 26, 2008, and will feature 8 well-known repertoires including Sleeping Beauty and Anastasia by Ms. Chan Hon Goh, Prima Ballerina of the National Ballet of Canada and various international guest stars. Tickets are on sale at $108 (VIP), $88, and $68.

According to Dr. Ming-Tat Cheung, President and Chairman of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto (CCC), “This performance is the first event in the CCC Chinese New Year Celebration Series. Every year, our Centre will organize a multitude of events to celebrate traditional festivities, and throughout the year, the Chinese New Year is especially important to us. Therefore, the CCC Chinese New Year Celebration Series often feature elegant and high-calibre cultural programs for Torontonians to celebrate the festivities. This is also the first time of our collaboration with the Mon Sheong Foundation in organizing such a large-scale community event, with the proceeds used toward supporting new programs of the CCC and the launching of a new senior day care centre with medical services for the Mon Sheong Foundation.“

Mr. Dennis Au-Yeung, Chairman of the Mon Sheong Foundation, explained, “Mon Sheong is dedicated to the promotion of Chinese culture, heritage, language and philosophy through the services of its long-term care centres, Chinese School, and Youth Group. In particular, the Foundation shares the same ideals with the CCC in areas of promoting Chinese culture and heritage, and providing programs and services in response to the needs of our communities. Through the collaboration of organizing this charity performance, we will be able to demonstrate our combined potential for increased and far-reaching support to enrich our culture.

Ms. Chan Hon Goh, Prima Ballerina of the National Ballet of Canada, added, “It is an honour for me to be a part of this charity performance as I believe strongly in giving back to the community in support of these two wonderfully caring organizations. To be able to program world class dance for our local Chinese community is a previledge and I am sure that they will fall in love with ballet there after.” On January 26, 2008, the audience will be able to enjoy the superb performances of renowned ballet dancers in several classical repertoires as well as newer contemporary Canadian choreography which I have personally selected.

Ms. Goh is recognized as one of North America's foremost ballerinas and has been a Principal Dancer of the National Ballet of Canada since 1994.

“On stage, Chan Hon Goh is the quintessential ballerina. A principal dancer with The National Ballet of Canada, Goh is one of the company's most exquisite classicists. Her ballon, or the lightness of her landings, is legendary. Her every movement is filled with a lyrical grace that defies gravity and the dramatic power of her expressive body compels attention. The great American Balanchine ballerina, Suzanne Farrell, describes Goh as someone who ‘illuminates technique.’ In short, Goh is everything that makes the ballet beautiful.”
—Paula Citron, NUVO Magazine

A much sought-after guest artist and producer who has appeared with numerous companies internationally, Ms Goh received the New Pioneers Arts Award for her contributions to dance in Canada. www.chanhongoh.com
