Shoushan Stone Exhibition And Seminars

Shoushan stone has been called “treasure from heaven” and “king of stones”; the art of Shoushan stone sculpture is an ancient art form peculiar to China, and every sculpted piece is a showcase of the spirit, wisdom, and sense of beauty of the Chinese people. Now, anyone interested in the appreciation or collection of Shoushan stones can view an exhibition of Shoushan stones in the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto.

On display is the private collection of Mr Raymond Chou, who remarked that this is one of the larger scale, more comprehensive displays among exhibitions of private collections of Shoushan stones outside China. As the aim of this exhibition is to introduce an aspect of Chinese culture and to serve as a channel of artistic exchange, Mr Chou is also happy to share his insights from his years of study and experience through a series of seminars:

September 20Part 1Introduction to the Shoushan stone of China
September 27Part 2Varieties of Shoushan stones
October 4Part 3History and major styles of Shoushan stone sculpture
October 11Part 4Techniques for sculpting Shoushan stones
October 18Part 5Collection and appreciation of Shoushan stones
October 25Part 6Identification and care of Shoushan stones
November 1Part 7Spread and cultural exchange of the art of Shoushan stone sculpture
November 8Part 8Overview of master sculptors who work with Shoushan stones

The series consists of eight 90-minute seminars conducted in Mandarin. Seminars will be held on Saturdays between 1:00–2:30pm and the first seminar will be held on September 20. Each seminar includes time for appreciation of actual stones, and brief notes (in Chinese) will be provided. Fees are $120 for the whole series, or $18 for each individual seminar. All proceeds will be donated to the Chinese Cultural Centre for the advancement and promotion of Chinese culture.
